The topic paper and packages is almost as old as mankind itself because as early as in the year 3.200 B.C. the Sumerian wrote on smooth clay plates. Today we know that the origin of paper lies in the ancient Egypt. The papyrus plant – flattened and put one upon the other – served as paper. In details it means that the thready pith of this plant was processed into sheets of paper and respectively roles. Moreover, by the year 2.700 B.C. various coats like for example calfskin or sheepskin was used as “paper”. This is called vellum. Beside these two types of “paper” there is furthermore “Tapa” (paper made of bark on the pacific islands), “Huun” (Maya) and “Amate” (also made of bark by the Aztecs). During the Roman Empire wax plates as well as papyrus were used to write on.
However, the paper invention can not be fixed to a specific time or epoch, as it happened in different phases of history and in different countries of the world.
Epoch making in the sense of today’s paper manufacturing was China. The Chinese Ts’ai Lun 105 AD invented paper of the type we know today. At that time the paper material was made of silk refuse which was again mixed with other materials. In China yet in the 2nd century existed tissue handkerchiefs and in the 6th century even toilet paper. In the 5th century the Mayan invented a papery material of pressed bask which suited for writing. Concerning Europe the Spanish were the pioneers of paper manufacturing. Germany is mentioned in this area not until the year 1389.
Besides the main purpose as carrier material paper has various other ranges of use. A favoured and common application is the packaging industry where paper is used as packing and filling material, as hygienic paper (e.g. toilet paper) or as special paper (e.g. wallpaper).
The packaging industry distinguishes two elements concerning the production of packages: on the one hand the package and on the other hand the packaging aid. The package is the real cover of a product. It closes or covers the goods, respectively keeps it together. Examples of it are cardboard boxes, bags, tubes and glasses. Common materials are wood, paper, plastics, cardboards, glass and metal. By packaging aid in contrast are meant materials which close the product for packing (e.g. crown cap or adhesive foil) or pad it out (e.g. foam or paperboard) in order to protect it against outer influence. Thereto belong for example dosing insets, packaging equipment, closings or padding and filling material.
