Details on packaging standards

Who is not afraid of the following scenario? A merchant sends a parcel and during transport to the destination it is damaged or even destroyed because of improper packaging. To avoid such incidents there exist the so-called packaging standards. These standards are regulations which control the packaging of various products in the case that there is no general package or standard package. These standards should protect a packaged product from outer impact like for example crushing or squeezing during transport. There are for example guidelines concerning the size and weight of a package, the labelling or the professional and appropriate packaging during transport. Concerning the packaging standards there are different regulations both at home and abroad. On the market there are lots of different guidelines. Here we would like to present an example. As packaging materials serve paper, cardboard and corrugated cardboard (each of them natural), massive, untreated wood and as an exception even plastics. If necessary, cardboard is used as filling material in order to compensate possible cavities within the packages. Many package manufacturers produce packages which are of a consistent basic colour. The most usual colour is yellow.

Via our B2B catalogue you have the possibility to contact different suppliers in the area paper and packaging. A first classification divides the different packages in primary packages, transport packages and loading equipment. The primary packages are classified into standard solid fibre cardboard box, the standard corrugated cardboard-box and the specifically designed package. Standard solid fibre cardboard boxes as well as corrugated-cardboard-boxes contain on the right side the yellow label with black imprint. These packages are used for standard products.

In contrast the coloured specifically designed package for self-service-products shall animate the customers to buy. Colours can vary from blue, yellow, to magenta and black. The most important task of transport packaging is to keep the packaged goods together and protect them from outer impact during transport. Usually, a transport package is composed from several primary packages. This may not weigh more than15 kg in total and the outer measures may not exceed 6 x 4 x 5m (length, width, height). In general, a shipping box made of corrugated cardboard serves as a transport package. They are labelled like the primary packages. In addition, international known administration signs have to be imprinted like for example the sign for fragile goods or the like. Assistive media for firms concerning transport and storage of the transport packages are for example plain pallets or pallet cages. These should protect the packaged goods and provide them with enough stability. According to the European regulation for pallets such a plain pallet has a basic size of 0,8m x 1,2m and according to the industry pallet regulation 1m x 1,2m. The maximum weight is 600 kg. A pallet cage is used if the nature of a good renders a packaging into a standard transport package impossible. The latter may not exceed the maximum weight of 1000 kg.
