Containers and boxes are a basic item of packaging

In the packaging industry you can hardly do without them – containers and boxes. In almost every product range there are goods, products and things which can be ideally packaged with cardboard boxes.

Cardboard boxes are perfect for packaging and wrapping and are therefore mainly used in the packaging industry and in the applied arts. With a weight between 130g/sqm and 600g/sqm cardboard lies exactly between paper and board.

There is a set of different cardboard types, like for example freight cardboard boxes, book cardboard boxes, heavy duty cardboard boxes, packaging cases, cardboard boxes for dangerous goods, standard cardboard boxes, normal cardboard boxes, folding boxes and bottle cardboard boxes.

Normally such a cardboard consists of cellulous, groundwood and recycled paper whereas the particular materials can be used variably. From cardboards the so-called paper board containers can be produced which consist of massive paper or cardboard.

Production of cardboard boxes

In cardboard production parallels to paper production can be found, but cardboard in opposition to paper production is based on recycling paper only to a minor extent. At first the cellulose and the recycling paper are prepared for the further processing. Concerning the cellulose this means the segmentation into single fibers and then pulverizing them into a watery mush. However, impurities and contaminants are removed from the recycling paper and it is then also pulverized. After being mixed to a watery solution with water and other additives the prepared recycling material is mixed with the cellulose. This mush is now carried on the filter-like endless conveyor. Meanwhile, the fibers conform to the running direction of the filter. During the cardboard’s further processing into folding boxes the running direction is of importance. In the cardboard machine the endless sheet is now passing successively different waltzing and drying cylinders. Following the last drying phase a white fluid is added onto the band, which in Germany is called “Strich” . This fluid mainly contains lime, binder and fillers. Amount and type of the used materials can vary enormously. In a further work step rough machined cardboard and the “Strich”  run together through various waltzing and drying cylinders. In the last work step of cardboard production the endless sheets are cut into single sheets and palletized.
